Pelagic birding in Peru
The richness of the Peruvian coast is the result of two water movements: The Humboldt Current, which flows northwards along the Peruvian coast, brings cool oxygen rich waters from Antarctica and the strong upwelling close to the Peruvian coast (because of the very short continental shelf) which brings up lots of nutrients. This causes a very high productivity in algae, being the primary level of the food chain, which consequently is the basis for an extraordinary rich marine life.
Nature Expeditions coastal marine birding trips offer a great opportunity to explore a unique ecosystem, which is of great importance not only for resident birds but also for a huge number of migratory marine and shore birds.
Nature Expeditions birding trips offer you a fascinating opportunity to observe a huge diversity of coastal, marine and terrestrial birds close to Peru’s capital Lima. Professional guiding enables you to see the maximum number of birds possible.
Nature Expeditions is Peru’s only tourism operator whose boats have the permits and safety standards to allow you to explore the high seas during real pelagic trips in order to enjoy observation of albatrosses and specialties like the Markham and Ringed storm petrel, as well as dozens of other pelagic bird species. Our boats are built with your safety and comfort in mind. If you plan for a marine birding trip in Peru please read our marine safety advice.
