Coastal wetland birding in Peru
Start birding in Peru right in the countries capital by visiting one of the many city parks in Lima, being populated by hawks, parrots, hummingbirds, wild doves and many other birds.
Peru’s beaches and bays are home to an amazing number of marine birds and migratory shore birds. Bird aggregations can become massive with up to several thousand specimens within one hundred meters of shoreline.
Squeezed in between the shoreline and the desert coastal wetlands are home to a huge number of birds and resting place to even bigger numbers of migratory birds. When birding in Peru’s coastal wetlands birders find different bird communities mingling in the same place from marine and shore birds to species known from lakes, agricultural and urban areas, native species as well as migratory birds.
During the Peruvian winter (June – October) the Peruvian desert coast is covered by thick fog. In some areas the humidity provides enough condensation for temporal plant growth. The entire lifecycle of these temporal oasis habitats (Loma) is squeezed into a few months of the year. Within weeks the desert sand is covered by thick green carpet of vegetation offering habitat or a great variety of birds, being a great place for birding in Peru.
You can also combine two or more of the above birding locations into a one day package for intensive birding.
Nature Expeditions birding trips offer you a fascinating opportunity to observe a huge diversity of coastal, marine and terrestrial birds close to Peru’s capital Lima. Professional guiding enables you to see the maximum number of birds possible.
