Application for altitude diving

Thank you very much for your interest in high altitude diving in Peru. The fact that you are now reading this page means two things:

1. You read the previous page thoroughly and you are aware of the increased health risks in case of dive accidents at altitude. (In the event that is not the case, please go to the previous page and read it, thanks!).

2. You consider yourself a diver with sufficient experience to enlist for high altitude diving in Peru.

On this page we take things to the next level and give you more detailed information about high altitude diving in Peru in order for you to be able to decide if participation is of interest to and/or appropriate for you.

The expedition we are proposing is a unique opportunity:

Nature Expedition is NOT offering recreational dive packages to Lake Titicaca. The risks are too great and the logistics way too complex. What we propose here is a “once in a life time” opportunity to dive in Lake Titicaca. As of today, there will not be a second expedition in 2010 and we have not yet decided if 2011 will see another dive expedition to Lake Titicaca.

The minimum number of participants is 3 divers and the maximum is 5. Beyond 5 divers the logistics become very difficult, therefore that number is fixed. So if you want to be part of this amazing adventure you have to contact me or register relatively quickly to ensure you get a spot. If you are diver number 6, we will put you on a waiting list, but chances of others cancelling are pretty remote.

The most important thing we care about is your safety:

After reading the previous page you are aware of the fact that the consequences of any type of diving accident during this expedition will be severe and that the diving location is extremely unfavorable when it comes to patient treatment and life support. We will have a DAN-first aid kit, but in case of a severe accident – let’s be honest – it would be pure cosmetics, buying you a couple of hours but definitely not solving your problem.

So the most important objective for us is to AVOID accidents. Therefore participation in this expedition is restricted to those who have the capacity to dive safely under the conditions described above. We will have a long list of medical and training requirements for you to comply with and we will evaluate and rank all applying participants according to their level of experience. If you do not have the qualifications we require, we will not take the risk of having you join the expedition.

The Expedition:

The expedition is planned for October 2010 (exact dates are still to be determined).
The expedition will last two weeks.
The expedition will be led by Stefan Austermühle.
The expedition cost to be carried by each participant is 15,000.- US$. This is all-inclusive at  the national level (includes your national flight Lima-Puno-Lima, equipment transport, overnight stay (4 star hotels whenever possible), food, terrestrial and aquatic transport, etc.). It also includes  a sightseeing program around the Lake Titicaca area in the first two days of adaptation to altitude and in the last two days (without diving) before the flight back to Lima.

If you want to stay longer in Peru you are of course welcome to book some more marine diving or visits to other Peru destinations with us.

Background information

What you should know about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Over the course of the next weeks we are going to upload detailed background information about high altitude diving in Peru onto this page, covering country and cultural information about the Lake Titicaca area, the lake’s ecology and environment, information about related topics from physiology, diving medicine, diving technology, dive tables, equipment adaptation, detailed expedition description etc. So by having a look at this page from time to time you can keep yourself updated. Applicants will receive this information via email.

4 Steps to become an expedition member

1.) Contact us

Click the application link at the bottom of this page and send us an email describing your interest to participate. There are two key elements to give us in your email:

  • Confirm that you understand the health risks involved with high altitude diving and make a clear statement in your own words exempting Nature Expeditons SAC and Stefan Austermühle as well as any other service provider or staff member of Nature Expeditions or related companies from any form of liability related to any kind of material, physical or fatal damage you may experience during your participation in the expedition in the event your application is accepted.
  • Declare that you are willing and capable to pay the participation fee in the event you are selected for participation.

Apart of that you may ask any question you like and introduce yourself with anything you find worthwhile telling us (but please make sure not to write more than an A4-page and please write only related stuff!)
The deadline for your email of interest is the end of April 2010

2.) Application:

After receiving your request we will answer all your questions and send you a detailed description of the expedition and all medical health and training requirements you have to comply with in order to be eligible.
Fill out and sign the documents and questionnaires.
Get the medical checks we are requiring you to do.
Scan the documents and send them back to us via email as attached documents.
The deadline for your application is the 15th of May 2010

3. Selection:
We will evaluate all applications and rank all applicants. If you are ranking in the top-five, we will let you know and ask you to go to step 4. If you are not ranking within the five highest ranking applicants we will put you on a waiting list, write you and tell you your rank in the waiting list. You will hear from us with this information at the latest on the 20th of May 2010.

4. Inscription:

If you are selected for participation (five highest ranking applicants) we will ask you to make a 50 % down payment on your participation fee (the remaining 50 % are due at the latest 1 month before the start of the expedition)

Your down payment has to be deposited on our account at the latest on the 1st of June 2010. If your payment has not arrived by that date we will write you an email asking you to check with your bank and give you five business days to confirm to us that your payment is on the way. If not we will invite the next highest ranking diver from the waiting list.

OK, that’s all for now. So, if you are interested in the adventure, just click below and write us:
