RAMSAR-site: wetlands of Villa
The Villa swamps (Pantanos de Villa) are the only protected natural area within the city of Lima. In 1997 the RAMSAR Convention acknowledged the area as an Internationally Important Wetland for Waterfowl, providing feeding, breeding, roosting and sheltering sites to resident and migratory birds, which travel many thousands of miles between North and South America, the Andean high altitude lagoons and the Amazon.
The protected area consists of several habitats, each for specific bird community. A total of 208 bird species have been reported for the area, of which 70% are migratory. On an average day we should be able to show you at least 35 species. Specialties to be seen are: Andean duck, Great grebe, Pied-billed grebe, Puna ibis, Wren-like rush bird, Many-colored rush-tyrant, White-cheeked pintail, Osprey, among many others.
