Birding in the Lomas de Lachay
During the Peruvian winter (June – October) the desert coast is often covered by a thick fog which in some places provides enough condensation water to allow for vegetation to grow. The protected area Lomas de Lachay, located 105 kilometers north of Lima is such a temporal fog oasis, covering an area of 5070 hectares. Plants, birds, mammals and reptiles have adapted their life cycles to fit into a few months of the year. Within weeks the desert sand is covered by thick green vegetation, even apparently dead tree-trunks become green and flower. It is an amazing nature experience to walk through the thick vegetation of the Lomas with its amazing diversity of hummingbirds, doves, parrots, as well as birds of prey and other species
all around you and afterwards enjoy the view over the surrounding desert from a hilltop.
